Sonia Ahsan-Tirmizi (PhD '15) Wins Fatema Mernissi, Two Additional Book Prizes

Sonia Ahsan-Tirmizi completed an incredible sweep with her book "Pious Peripheries: Runaway Women in Post-Taliban Afghanistan" this past weekend.

From The Middle East Studies Association (MESA), she received the 2022 Fatema Mernissi Book Award, which recognized "outstanding scholarship in studies of gender, sexuality, and women’s lived experience." 

The Association of Middle East Anthropology (AMEA) also awarded her honorable mention for their bi-annual Book Award, given to anthropological work that "features creative ethnographic writing, innovative data collection strategies, and sophisticated analysis."  And from The Association for Middle East Women's Studies (AMEWS), she received honorable mention for their Book Award, which "recognizes and promotes excellence in the field of Middle East gender, women’s and sexuality studies."

Sonia Ahsan-Tirmizi received her PhD from Columbia University in 2015 and is a Fall 2022 Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology.
