The purpose of this event is to inaugurate broad, deep and critical discussion of the
changed environment in which the university now functions. It is animated by several
questions: How can the university be defended in the face of rising authoritarianism,
isolationism, and growing hostility to the principles of equity and diversity? How should it
navigate threats from government agencies and donors to curb academic freedom through
financial pressure? What can it do to defend itself against suspicion of critical thought and
academic freedom, the bedrocks of university life? What transformations are necessary to
secure its essential role in society, and to ensure its relevance in a changing world?
