Lecture delivered by Associate Professor Catherine Fennell and discussant Collegiate Assistant Professor, Chloe Ahmann, for the Urban Workshop at the University of Chicago.

Cosponsored by UChicago Urban and the Council on Advanced Studies, the Urban Workshop provides a forum for presenting research that broadly engages conceptions of (the) urban in ways that crosscut fields, media, topics, areas, periods, and disciplines. By building on existing approaches, workshop attendees pursue the ongoing development of analytic frameworks, methods, and practices that take (the) urban (or its critique) as a frame of reference. Past topics have included gentrification and urban renewal; architecture and design; low-income housing; urban poverty; and street art. We look forward to receiving papers that address topics including (but not limited to) linguistic landscapes and soundscapes; industrialisms and post-industrialisms; urban photography; and ways to rethink the rural–urban divide. Graduate students from any discipline are welcome to submit papers.
