Dr. David Boarder Giles (he, him) is a Senior Lecturer in Anthropology at Deakin University. He writes about waste, value, and survival under capitalism, particularly in urban economies. His research has examined the politics and cultural economy of manufactured scarcity, homelessness, hunger, food and housing systems, and public space in “global” cities. He has done ethnographic fieldwork in the United States and Australasia with homeless encampments and advocates, mutual aid networks, and urban food movements. He is the author of A Mass Conspiracy to Feed People: Food Not Bombs and the World-Class Waste of Global Cities (Duke University Press 2021).
