Mexico's Disappeared Practicum
, 4 pts, UN3846Mexico's Disappeared Prac
This seminar examines the causes and social dynamics of the phenomenon of forced disappearance in contemporary Mexico. It is an engaged pedagogy course, meaning that the academic work we do will be conducted in conjunction with, and for the benefit of, collectives of families of the disappeared. Specifically, our course is organized around collaborative research with two collectives, one in the Cuernavaca, Morelos ("Volviendo a Casa, Morelos") and one in the city of Puebla ("Voz de los desaparecidos"). We shall also be collaborating with the Universidad Iberoamericana-Puebla's Human Rights Program, and the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Cuajimalpa's Proyecto sobre desaparición forzada, that have been accompanying the collectives of the families of the disappeared.
In addition to background academic coursework on the subject, students will conduct social and legal conditions research that will assist the Morelos and Puebla collectives in their daily efforts to process their legal claims to gain government support in their efforts to find their loved ones, as well as in their independent efforts to make their plight socially visible, and to find their disappeared loved ones.
