Fern Grear investigates the articulation of musical culture and capitalist social relations. Her dissertation research focuses on an urban music scene in Havana, Cuba and its connections to neighborhood groups, government agencies, and transnational investors, amid the ongoing legal expansion and ideological entrenchment of private enterprise. She asks: how do musical practices mediate the confrontation of private and social wealth?
