Research Interest

North America

Mitchem studies the manipulation of plants in the past using macro botanical remains (seeds and other plants that have been preserved and recovered archaeologically via flotation) and ethnoarchaeology. She is currently developing a dissertation project centered around the role of Botanical Gardens in eighteenth century North America, and what they can reveal about the emerging discipline of “natural science” as a place and sense making enterprise.
