Matt Lukacz is a graduate student in the department of anthropology at Columbia University. He has obtained bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and psychology, and a master’s degree, all from the University of Illinois. His ongoing research mobilizes historical and ethnographic methods to understand the uptake of advanced computational technologies in environmental sciences. Matt also draws on information infrastructure studies and the political economy of science to understand how market-academia dynamics shape environmental knowledge production. His graduate work focuses on the application of machine learning in conservation biology and weather forecasting. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Smithsonian Institution, and National Geographic.
